Today, Kimora Lee Simmons announced the newest addition to the Baby Phat empire, Baby Phat Beauty, as a part of a collaboration with her daughters. The brand’s vision for the new beauty line is to give its consumers what they’ve wanted all along, which is representation in the Black-owned beauty space.
It seems like yesterday when the queen of “fabulosity” took over the urban fashion world by launching Baby Phat in 1999. We’d watch with twinkles in our eyes as she’d strut down the runway with her daughters, Ming-Lee and Aoki-Lee, at the end of each show. Fast forward to 2019, the fashion brand relaunched, this time in collaboration with Forever 21 with a special Baby Phat Anniversary collection that had us all busting down the mall doors to get our hands on a tube top or bucket hat with that famous shiny Baby Phat cat logo.
The fashion guru says the launch is all about remaining relevant. “When I launched Baby Phat in 1999, I had to fight for a seat at the table in both the high- fashion and streetwear worlds,” she said in a press release. “I did that by staying true to myself and bringing up an entire generation who embraced diversity, body-positivity and body-confidence all while being unapologetically glam and sexy. Buying back the brand has given me the opportunity to tell that story all over again to a new generation–a generation I raised. Launching into beauty, feels like the most relevant way to tell that story in today’s landscape.”
Baby Phat Beauty’s collection includes several Shimmer Dreams sets – a three-piece kit containing a plumping lip-gloss, illuminating body spray and hydrating lotion. Each set, priced at $45, were inspired by Kimora and her daughters.
Ming-Lee was the inspiration behind the Opulence Shimmer Dreams set, which contains a sparkly pink lip-gloss, a sweet fruity and floral-scented body spray and lotion.
The Ethereal Shimmer set, sparked by Aoki-Lee, includes a pink champagne-colored lip-gloss with a body spray and lotion containing notes of pear and amber for a more radiant scent.
Lastly, the Divine Shimmer Dreams set, created with Kimora in mind, features a chestnut bronzed lip-gloss with a body spray and lotion that contains warm notes of vanilla musk and sandalwood.
Baby Phat told WWD that all proceeds of its first launch would be donated to Fair Fight, a voting rights organization purposed with ending voter suppression. All sets are available now on BabyPhatBeauty.com.
